Parking suspension and dispensation in London
We advise on parking suspensions and dispensations where required, helping prevent delays, long carries, or parking fines on moving day.
Why parking matters on moving day in London
Securing legal parking for your removal van is one of the most important steps in planning a London move. In busy residential streets and permit-controlled zones, arriving without a reserved space can mean PCN fines, vehicle relocation, or your crew having to carry furniture 50 metres further than necessary, adding time and cost to your day.
As a Super Elite Plus Remover Award 2026 winner with over 15 years of daily operations across all London boroughs, Best London Removals Ltd will guide you through exactly what is needed for your street, your borough, and your move date.
Understanding the difference: suspension vs dispensation
A suspension reserves a specific, physical space on the road for the exclusive use of our moving vehicle
Parking suspension
Best for: Busy residential streets with permit-only parking.
The result: The council places yellow “No Parking” signs a few days before we arrive, guaranteeing a spot directly outside your door.
Requirement: We require two standard bays to park one 3.5t Maxi Mover van(approx. 10 metres) to safely operate our loading ramp. Three bays will be needed to park two vans
Parking dispensation
A dispensation is a permit that allows a vehicle to park where it normally couldn’t, such as on a single yellow or red line or in a restricted bay, without reserving a specific spot.
Best for: Short loading windows or areas where marked bays are not available.
The result: It prevents us from receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), but it does not guarantee that a space will be empty when we arrive.
2026 London parking lead times and costs
Parking rules vary significantly by borough. Based on our daily operations from our Ruislip base, we recommend the following:
Notice periods: Most councils now require 10 to 14 working days’ notice for a suspension. Short-notice “Express” applications (less than 5 days) now often incur a £357 surcharge in boroughs like Kensington & Chelsea.
Average costs: Expect to pay between £40 and £110 per bay, per day. Many central boroughs have moved to a tiered system where the cost increases if you need the space for more than one day.
ULEZ compliance: All Best London Removals vehicles are fully ULEZ compliant, so you will never be charged for our vehicle’s emissions, only for the physical parking space.
How much space do you need to book?
To ensure our removals teams can work safely and efficiently, we require the following parking clearance:
One 3.5t maxi mover van: for smaller moves, our man and van service requires 2 bays (approx. 10 metres). This allows for the length of the vehicle plus the rear loading ramp.
Two 3.5t maxi mover vans: requires 3 bays (approx. 15 metres). Because we can park the vehicles close together, you save the cost of a fourth bay.
Safety note: Always ensure there are no “tree overshades” or low-hanging branches in your chosen spot, as our Maxi Movers are high-roof vehicles.

What is a parking suspension and why do I need one?
A parking suspension is a legal reservation of specific roadside bays for a set period, enforced by “No Parking” signs placed by the council. In London, this is essential for most residential moves. It guarantees our removal van can park directly outside your property, preventing delays, long carries, or penalty charge notices on moving day.
What is the difference between a suspension and a dispensation?
A suspension physically reserves named bays so no other vehicle can use them. A dispensation allows our vehicle to park in a restricted area, such as a single yellow line or resident bay, without receiving a fine, but it does not guarantee the space will be empty when we arrive.
Suspensions are recommended wherever possible.
Do I need to arrange parking, or will Best London Removals do it?
We can apply for and reserve a parking bay on your behalf. Just let us know when you book. The council fee is passed on at cost and will be added to your invoice.
If you’d prefer to handle the application yourself, we’ll let you know exactly what to book, how many bays you need, and the deadline for your borough.
Is the cost of parking included in my removal quote?
No. Parking suspension and dispensation fees are paid directly to the local council and are separate from our service fee. We will tell you what to book so there are no surprises, but these costs sit outside our quote
How many bays should I book for my move?
For a standard move using one of our 3.5t Maxi Mover vans, book 2 bays (approximately 10 metres). If your move requires two vans, 3 bays (approximately 15 metres) is sufficient, as we park vehicles close together.
Always check for low-hanging trees or overhead obstructions before confirming your location.
How far in advance do I need to apply?
Most London boroughs require between 5 and 17 working days’ notice. Camden currently requires 17 working days. We strongly recommend applying as soon as your move date is confirmed. Late applications often carry significant surcharges, and in some boroughs, cannot be processed at all within a certain window.
Can I just block a space with cones or bins instead?
No. Reserving public highway space without council approval is not legally permitted. Cones or bins placed without authorisation can be removed by enforcement officers, and the space may still be taken by another driver. Only an official suspension guarantees the space, and only a dispensation legally protects you from a PCN in a restricted zone.
What happens if someone parks in my suspended bay on moving day?
Contact your council’s parking enforcement team immediately. Most boroughs can dispatch a warden to issue a PCN to the offending vehicle. In some areas, removal can also be arranged, though response times vary. Having the suspension reference number and photos of the signage to hand will speed things up.
Do your vehicles comply with the ULEZ and LEZ regulations?
Yes. All Best London Removals vehicles are fully ULEZ and LEZ compliant. You will never face an emissions charge for our vehicles; the only parking-related cost you need to budget for is the council’s bay suspension or dispensation fee.
